Can dogs eat peanut butter?
Always check that your peanut butter does not include xylitol before giving it to your dog.
Dogs can eat peanut butter. But some peanut butter brands contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. Even eating a small amount can be fatal.
Peanut butter is also quite high in fat, and sometimes has added salt or sugar. As with all treats, peanut butter should be given to dogs in moderation and fed alongside a healthy balanced diet.
Important
Always check the ingredients label before giving your dog peanut butter. Never give it to them if xylitol (sometimes called wood sugar or birch sugar) is listed in the ingredients.
What is xylitol?
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener. It is often used in foods to keep the product sugar free. If your dog eats anything with xylitol in it, or another sugar free product, call your vet urgently.
Which dogs should not eat peanut butter?
Even dog safe peanut butter may not be a good idea for some dogs. For example:
- overweight dogs. Peanut butter contains fat so it is not ideal for dogs who are overweight. Healthier alternatives for training treats include plain chicken, ham and tuna.
- dogs who eat special diets. If your dog is sensitive to some foods or has been put on a special diet to keep them healthy, it’s best not to deviate from what they usually eat.
If you aren't sure on if your dog can have peanut butter, ask your vet for advice.
How should I give my dog peanut butter?
Peanut butter should be given only in moderation alongside a balanced diet. Here are some ways to give your dog peanut butter:
- Keeping them entertained. Smear it inside a Kong, on a chew or on a lick mat to give them something to focus on during chill out time.
- A distraction. Peanut butter is very tasty and can help to make a dog feel more comfortable during an experience they don’t really enjoy, eg having their nails clipped or having a bath. You could smear it on the bath or tiles while you shampoo them to keep them distracted (this will not be suitable for dogs who have a fear of situations like this, as it may make the problem worse).
- Training your dog. Peanut butter is a high value reward so give them a taste after they’ve shown a behaviour you’ve asked them to show (eg during muzzle training). This will make them more likely to repeat the behaviour again next time you ask as they’ll remember being rewarded.
